is it a toy, or is it the real thing? : Razor Dirt Quad Electric Four-Wheeled Off-Road Vehicle (Red)
This is no plastic ride-on toy like Powerwheels or Pegro. It has a welded steel frame, rear suspension (with adjustable pre-tension), a rear cross-drilled disc brake (operated by hand), a 350W brushed DC motor with a pulse width modulated motor controller, a weatherproof power switch and charge port, and a low battery indicator on the throttle. This ride is metal, so it is heavy with dual 12V batteries. Two adults can easily lift it into a truck though.
The tires are pneumatic rubber tires - wheel barrow or hand truck variety (easy to replace). The wheels are steel and use precision ball bearings. Without the clatter of plastic tires all you hear is the humming motor and some chatter from the chain drive; what a relief from plastic on gravel :-). The steering has real tie-rod ends and adjustable alignment. The steering is linear but will make very sharp turns lock to lock.
The grip throttle is a real throttle... You can make the quad bike creep along at a fraction of a mile per hour, with any speed in between, or go wide open for 8-10mph of action. There is no reverse. My kid manages to pull it backwards if he gets it stuck somewhere but it is heavy and doesn't free-wheel. My kid can nurse it along at walking speed if we ask him to.
The brake is operated with a left hand lever. My 36" tall 32lb four year old struggles to reach the open position of the hand-brake, but manages. Another important distinction from typical ride-on toys: no engine braking. It gently coasts to a stop instead of shorting poles on the motor. Kids need to be educated on this right away.
The motor drives the solid rear axle via a covered chain. There is no differential, so tight turns on pavement feel a little strange. But we didn't buy this to drive on pavement now did we? The motor has power to pull out of tight situations from a dead stop. Acceleration is smooth with the progressive throttle, unlike the on/off operation of a typical toy.
Battery life is outstanding... I have seen 1.5 hours ride time in 50-60F weather in grass and gravel. My child drives it over to his friends house while we walk with him; about .5 miles round trip through tall grass and gravel. The batteries are 2x 12V 7Ah sealed lead acid in series for 24VDC. A 30A fuse protects all wiring. An intelligent charger manages the batteries, and the bike should be charged after every use (like any SLA battery). Don't let your kids run down the batteries; teach them to watch for the "low" indication.
The plastic body cover has a cushioned seat, and mud flaps. When my kid pounds the mud puddles with it he gets a little splatter on him; the fenders could be a little wider. Feet are well protected in foot-well molding with a grippy surface.
Good: High quality product. Very serviceable. Razor will sell you any part you need after warranty (unlike Power-Wheels). Kids learn how to use it very quickly. Powerful, more like a four-wheeler and less like a toy. It is well worth the cost (twice that of a Powerwheel four-wheeler). Having as much fun as a 49cc gas pocket-quad without the complexity or pollution - Priceless.
Bad: No reverse (would have been very easy to implement in the motor controller). Higher center of gravity, high speed, high traction and sharp turning radius combination can get it up on two wheels (kid learned to manage this). No lights.
Notes: Will be adding headlight and tail light, along with a DPDT switch for polarity reversing on the motor. Also adding a small tool-box for storage like the old toys had. Might modify brake lever for smaller-hands. Also adding a small trailer hitch for wagons and such.
